Excerpt from a letter by an 11 year old homeless girl, who lives in a motel room with her mother and older brother
"It is hard to live in a motel room. You would think with my mom working two jobs a day, we wouldn't be in this situation. It's messed up my life"
"When no one is around, I cry sometimes. I even cry myself to sleep sometimes. Two weeks ago, for the first time since I was little, I cried in front of my mom, which I don't like to do because I'm scared that I am making her feel like she is not doing her job when she really is".
"I feel locked up in this motel. I mean, we never did anything wrong, why did this happen to us? My friends ask why I can't do the stuff I used to, but my mom can't afford it. My brother doesn't want anyone to know our situation. He is embarrassed. On the outside I seem cool, like nothing is going on at home, but on the inside I'm screaming in tears".

Meet Stephanie...
Stephanie (age 10) and her brother (age 2) were living in a motel room with their drug addicted mother when we first encountered this family.
Stephanie and her brother are lucky. They had a grandmother who was fighting for custody and won! Grandma, who is widowed and in her early 70's, is on a fixed income. While she can supply them a warm and loving atmosphere every child deserves, she could not afford to purchase necessities like beds, linens etc.
MCF (that's YOU) secured two twin beds for these children. We paid for long overdue dental work for Stephanie and provided diapers and essentials for her brother.
In the fall, we will invite Grandma and the children to our "Shop with the Sheriff" event where they can purchase school supplies and school clothes for Stephanie.

Meet Tony...
Tony is a 7 year old boy who was living in a motel room with his mom, dad and 3 other siblings ages 15, 9 and 1.
His dad has been employed at the same job for 5 years. His mother lost her full time job over a year ago while she was pregnant with Tony's brother. As a result of the reduced income, they could no longer afford their rental home.
They moved in with Tony's Uncle where they resided for several months until his Uncle (a laid off auto worker) lost his home also. Tony and his family were forced to move into a motel room.
For one year, Tony and his siblings have shared beds in this motel. All of their personal belongings were put into storage. Cooking in the room is not allowed which makes feeding a family of 6 costly.
Summer was looking bleak for these children as playing outdoors in this motel is not an option.
Tony's mom and dad are hard working proud people who have never been "in the system". They needed a helping hand to get them out of this situation. A careful review of their finances revealed what they could afford per month in rent. With the assistance of MCF (that's YOU); this family was able to move into a rented mobile home. MCF provided help with the security deposit and first month’s rent. We also paid the storage fee's to get their belongings back to them.
MCF will continue to monitor their finances and offer encouragement and advice to this family.
Because of your support, these children will not have to catch the school bus at a motel anymore.
